World by night - courtesy NASA

“The brightest areas of the Earth are the most urbanized, but not necessarily the most populated. (Compare western Europe with China and India.) Cities tend to grow along coastlines and transportation networks” World by Night - NASA.

Have a look to Concentration of languages in the world, and see if you can make some assumptions out of this (electricity by night could be considered as a criteria of development)… do not hesitate to share your thoughts on comment.

Go and have a look to North Korea btw (how come can they build a nuclear weapon within such conditions ?).

Isn’t strange to see the whole world at night on the same time :-) :-) ?
