6 billion others… testimonials from all over the world

Yann Arthus Bertrand - a french photographer - has been prolific in photo projects (”terre vue du ciel” where he took pictures from a hot air balloon all around the earth). His current one is about describing people from all around the world. If you want to meet your global neighbour, click here, and enjoy, even if because these interviews are quite short, I believe they are stereotyped… let’s say it’s just nice.

Latin Alphabet evolution

Nowadays Latin Alphabet, employed all around the world, is the fruit of a few thousands year’s evolution, from Phoenician, greek, Etruscan, Latin to these days,… visualize it through this enclosed map, nice mutation… huh ?

From a personal point of view, in this presentation, I am not sure that “U” did not exist in the Roman times. Indeed “rosarum” is a latin word (has it been added during the middle-age ?), “veritas” as well.

Besides, additions are incomplete (only European ones were mentionned). What about the Asian ones (Vietnamese language is based on the latin alphabet as well - different letters)) ?

If you have any similar image projects about the evolution of any known alphabet on this earth, please mention them on the comments…

Cows and Political regimes … a Compilation

This combination of “Cows explaining economics and politics” is a classic on the web. Straightforward and full of humour, it gives a pretty good / sarcastic insight of standard systems. Hereunder is a compilation of various definitions.

(Curious about other similar Loca Lingo materials ? go for Loca Lingo maps according to Google, according to America, selon les français. Have a look as well to the UN joke. Enjoy.)

FEUDALISM
You have two cows. Your lord takes some of the milk.

PURE SOCIALISM
You have two cows. The government takes them and puts them in a barn with everyone else’s cows. You have to take care of all the cows. The government gives you a glass of milk.

BUREAUCRATIC SOCIALISM
Your cows are cared for by ex-chicken farmers. You have to take care of the chickens the government took from the chicken farmers. The government gives you as much milk and eggs as the regulations say you should need. Read the rest of this entry »

World (well,… UK) timeline

If you want to know more about British history,… here enclosed is a link you could clearly have pleasure with. proposed by the BBC, if your connection supports Flash, enjoy this interactive timeline from the Neolithic and Bronze age until nowadays (2005), passing by the Iron Age, Roman Britain, Vikings and Anglo-Saxons, Norman Britain, Middle Ages, Tudor, Civil War and Revolution, Empire and Sea Power, Victorian Britain, and the World War time periods.

There are possibilities as well to just get the history of these less known Celtic regions (Whales, Scotland and Northern Ireland) part of the United Kingdom. Their cultural identities are supposed to be different from “main England”… do you believe the BBC fairly and objectively treated this, or is this biased ?

Cross-Cultural political UN joke

A worldwide survey was conducted by the UN. The only question asked was:

“Would you please give your honest opinion about solutions to the food shortage in the rest of the world?”

The survey was a huge failure…

In Africa they didn’t know what “food” meant.
In Eastern Europe they didn’t know what “honest” meant.
In Western Europe they didn’t know what “shortage” meant.
In China they didn’t know what “opinion” meant.
In the Middle East they didn’t know what “solution” meant.
In South America they didn’t know what “please” meant.
And in the USA they didn’t know what “the rest of the world” meant.

Meet Brazilian Icaro Doria’s world

This is a 2 years-old hoax created by an advertising agency (FCB portugal), “Meet the World” by Icaro Doria, for a Brazilian magazine (”Revista Grande Reportagem”), gives a new interpretation about the colors of a few national flags.

Colors of the flags were substituted to UN / Amnesty International data their real proportion would match. From drug export, mortality rate, oil consumption, genital mutilation (sign the petition) till the war in Iraq, flags - holly untouchable symbols - can actually give various views of the country they represent. Watch out stereotypes though.
