Japanese, Chinese, Korean,… all look the same ?

Try out this quiz (pretty nice website, philosophy btw… I like). For those who are ready to get wrong from a cultural recognition point of view, please go for it (quiz link is in the top right of this “alllooksame.com” blog) !

Frankly speaking if you manage to get an above-average score… congratulations !
Previously, when I was expat in this fantastic world, I was able to differentiate Asian nationals (even between a Korean and a Japanese - without of course looking at the scripts of their travel books or listening at them, just through the attitude) and believe me this is pretty tough.

chopsticks

For the face section, I underperformed (sighh, did I forget everything or maybe wait, there is some moral…), but for the art one, I got the “you are pretty talented (yes, I still managed to grasp a “cultural specificity something”:-)…

Whatever, spend some time in the alllooksame.com “philosophy” section as well, the point of view worth the reading.

By the way, where do we use chopsticks ?
in Japan, Korea or China (that’s easy) ?

Historical architectureS of Asia… quiz

from Borodur (Yogyakarta - Indonesia), Emin minaret (Turpan - China), City walls and Bell Tower (Xian - China), Wat Dhoi Suthep (Chiang Mai - Thailand), Imperial City (Hue - Viet Nam) to Psar Thmei (Pnomh Penh - Cambodia)… the ones who think Asia as just a standardized “Chinatown” continent, without any diversity (a bit like the Asian restaurants in Europe / America, where all serve a standardized mix of Chinese / Vietnamese and Thai food) should definitely spend some time on this Asian map ; a snapshot of historical architectures where you would realize that comparing a Mongol yurt to a Malaysian one is like comparing a Finish sauna to a Spaniard one…

Would you be able to recognize the architecture style down here ? Any idea about where these buildings are located (as their purposes) ?

Global cross-cultural business quiz

Yes, I am currently in the mood for quizzes (let’s see how far this will go :-)).

The following one is a bit more business oriented, pretty global - you can chose from a list of countries and regions : South Africa, West Africa, Arab countries, China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Turkey, Australia, Britain, Belgium, France, Greece, Italy, Luxemburg, Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Scandinavia, Spain, Switzerland, United States, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica.

I went through the Belgian questions ; pretty relevant, even if it always depends on the type of people you’ll meet - generalization is always a mistake… even within the cross-cultural theory. Being natural and yourself always pays off (more my strategy to be honest).
Concerning the question about the wrapped flowers, I am not so sure…

Concerning the French one, I am not sure about the automatic wine refill (you just state before it gets poured “this glas will be my last one”), and the “not-so-friendly business” atmosphere (it depends)…

Make up your own opinion… Being too much “cross-cultural aware” can sometimes lead to unexpected situations (e.g. getting screwed), but that’s my own opinion…

USA immigration quiz

Immigration and the America’s. Immigration and the USA.
From the stories of Ogoni refugees from Africa, Dominican Ballplayers, Palestinian Bride, Indian Tech Worker to the Mexican Laborer. These people left everything behind, and built up a brand new life from scratch.

They are one of the primary reasons why this country is so dynamic… a meeting point of personalities not afraid of risks and taking up challenges.

Go through this USA immigration quiz,… your ending scores might not be that high, but you’ll clearly get a different vision about immigration. You’ll get to know more about this phenomemon part of a certain exodus (read the related articles in French)… more positive, different from the usual negative one vehiculated in Europe.

this country is built by immigrants

what about your home country ?
How immigrants are considered in your home country ?
Do you think this is part of a growing trend ?

Test out your Cross-cultural abilities ; check out if you are ready to travel, or create local business overthere…

Personnally, I reached a score of 7 out of 11 - nope, I don’t know everything yet… needing to check a bit more about Spain, England, Poland and Scotland… which is weird, cose I have been living in the UK, and spent some time in Poland and Spain - frustration, frustration…

European webcams - quiz

Curious about live European footages (EU countries more precisely) ?

Go and check this then. Click on the country you want to get views from.

Not always the best locations (highways, streets for the most), while the good spots look like nothing special … just a normal place, without the magic of travel marketing make up, or postcard perfection ; with cranes, traffic jams and rain… be ready to see an everyday life of what seems “immortal / eternal”, printed in our minds. Advertising, advertising, beautifying your vision of life..

Could you figure out what are these (pretty wellknown) touristic hot spots ? Without cheating ? If the image is dark, think about time zones, as this could be night…

1. Lake
2. Skyline
3. Place
4. Avenue
5. Mountain

Some places seem to be sunny everyday… strange…
